As part of the Penguin Book Cover competition 2018 I responded to their Adult Fiction brief to produce a cover for George Orwell's' Animal Farm. Due to the basis of the book being set around animals on a farm, I have chosen to give my book cover a rather earthy feel to reflect the communism with in the book that the animals portray.
The method I have used to recreate the background image to the cover is of photo transferring. I have chosen the images of a windmill and a barn as these are both sites mentioned within Animal Farm. I have further carried through the feel of a barn by utilising balsa wood that I have layered in such a way to mimic the effect of a barn door. I have a firm belief that recreating earthy and woody covers are best done by creating the the techniques in person rather than digitally as this can give a more natural feel to the finished product.
I have chosen to utilise two fonts within my cover, the first chalky which I believe mimics the essence of hand writing which the book mentions when the animals start to write the commandments on the barn. I have mixed this font with a san serif typeface for a stronger readability of the main blurb and spine text.
